What is a USDOT number? (and how brokers should use it)

A USDOT number is the unique identifier FMCSA assigns to a company that operates commercial motor vehicles. It's the key that links a carrier's registration, inspections, crashes, safety rating and insurance filings.

USDOT number vs. operating authority

A USDOT number alone does not let a company haul regulated freight for hire across state lines. For-hire interstate carriers also need operating authority, identified by a docket number (MC, FF or MX). Always check both: a USDOT number with no active for-hire authority is a red flag for a broker.

How to use it when vetting

  • Look up the number and confirm the legal name, location and fleet size match what the carrier told you.
  • Check that operating authority is active and insurance is on file.
  • Review out-of-service rates and crash history from roadside inspections.
  • Compare the phone number in FMCSA records with the one you were given.
