What is an MC number? Docket numbers explained

An MC number is a docket number FMCSA issues when it grants interstate operating authority to a for-hire motor carrier. Freight forwarders receive FF numbers and certain Mexico-domiciled carriers receive MX numbers.

One USDOT, several dockets

A company has one USDOT number but can hold more than one authority โ€” for example carrier and broker authority. In FMCSA's newer registration records each operating authority carries its own docket number, so you may see several dockets for the same USDOT number.

What to check

  • The MC number the carrier gives you maps to the same USDOT number and company name.
  • The authority is active โ€” not pending, inactive or revoked.
  • Required insurance is on file for that authority.
